A Silvery Powder Room Makeover in One Weekend

Four years ago, when we first moved into our brand-new home, I painted our main floor powder room a sunshiney yellow shade.  Last January I used those yellow walls as  the beginning of a gold/grey colour scheme.    I really liked the warmth of the wall colour and the modern feel of the grey mixed in.

But now, a year later, my little, well-used powder room needs a little fix-up.
Well actually - it needs A LOT of fix-up!!

So why does this room need a re-do??

Well - I'd say this is the most-used room in our home besides the kitchen.  I know I don't have to get into the details about why a powder room servicing a family of five including three kids under 8 might get a little "roughed up," but here are a few....

This is a close-up of the bead board wallpaper I put up 2 years ago.  Cute at the time, but now it has scratches and dents everywhere and is far from pretty!

You get the picture....

The paint I chose is Burnished Metal by Behr.
I bought the paint/primer in one so the yellow covered easily in one coat of grey.
But the bead board wallpaper was another story!!
As I pulled the paper off of the wall, the vinyl outer layer peeled off easily, but the pasted paper layer remained stuck to the wall
Ugh!!

After a bit of panic (after all this was supposed to be a relatively easy and low-stress makeover!) I remembered how my mother used to remove wallpaper when I was a little girl - a spray bottle of a water/vinegar solution and a metal scraper.  And wouldn't you know it - it worked like a charm!!

After the final layer of paper was off, I gave the walls a good wash down and my dear, sweet hubby got to work.
I had purchased $30 worth of decorative trim for him to attach to the wall as  our own version of "board and batten." He measured everything out and applied to wood easily with his trusty compressor and nail gun.

Some painter's tape, some priming and some painting later, this is how my powder room walls look now:

Pretty gorgeous, huh??  I love how it turned out.
And done all in one weekend !!

Now that the walls are done, I can focus on some new accessories and decor for the space.  I am thinking I want a really vintage vibe for this room.....
Keep an eye on the blog for an update soon....

(And if you thought my hubby was just another good-looking guy who is good with a nail gun, this is what I found him doing later in the  day:

Who says Mommy has to do all of the blow-drying around here ??

Much love,

B.
